With the collaboration of architect Chad Oppenheim, Simpson Park was designed to »recapture nature«. A modern wood structure creates a new visible entrance to the historic hammock park and extends the native greenery out to the sidewalks. This symbolic gesture was important to make visible a sensitive mix of modern and historic Miami. The entrance introduces the visitor to the elements of the hammock: native plants, unique light qualities, and sense of mystery, by presenting these features in a modern interpretation. The park«s richness in historical and ecological resources makes it an educational platform to remind Miami of its past.
